1/ST Racing reported Monday that the 150th Preakness Stakes day card generated $110 million in total handle, approaching the all-time record for the event. The figure represents an 11.3% increase over the $98,858,918 wagered on last year’s Preakness program.
The 14-race card, headlined by Journalism (Curlin) winning the second jewel of the Triple Crown, fell just short of the record $112,504,509 established in 2021.
The strong financial performance comes at a significant moment for historic Pimlico Race Course, which stands on the verge of demolition after hosting the prestigious race for the 150th time.
In a notable coincidence, this year’s winning trainer Michael McCarthy also conditioned 2021 Preakness winner Rombauer during the record-setting year.
The impressive handle figures demonstrate continued strong interest in the Triple Crown series despite the pending changes to the historic Baltimore venue.
