Into Mischief Colt Impresses in Fair Grounds Debut Victory
Repole Stable‘s Ancient World delivered an eye-catching performance Thursday at Fair Grounds, rallying from last to first in his career debut for trainer Joe Sharp.
The 3-year-old gelding by Into Mischief, sent off as the even-money favorite, overcame a sluggish start to win the $52,000 maiden special weight by a length under jockey Jose Ortiz. He completed the six-furlong sprint in 1:10.20.
Ancient World’s victory came after displaying impressive morning form, including a bullet four-furlong gate work in :46 4/5 (fastest of 113) on February 9.
Despite trailing the eight-horse field early as Sargent Sully established a blistering opening quarter in :21.63, Ancient World found his best stride turning for home. The Kentucky-bred gelding unleashed a powerful closing kick down the stretch to overtake the pacesetter.
“He showed exactly what we’ve been seeing in the mornings,” Sharp said after the race.
The winner is out of the Indian Charlie mare Thirteen Arrows, a multiple stakes winner who earned $277,375 during her racing career. She’s a daughter of multiple Grade 1 winner Stop Traffic.
Thirteen Arrows produced a filly by Life Is Good last year and was bred back to Cody’s Wish. The Into Mischief-Indian Charlie cross has previously yielded Grade 1 winner Dayoutoftheoffice.
Repole Stable acquired Ancient World for $525,000 at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
