Galilean Represented By First Winner At the Big A

Galilean Sires First Winner as Froutien Captures Maiden Special Weight at Aqueduct

Heavily favored Froutien became the first winner for freshman sire Galilean on Saturday, capturing a $80,000 New York-bred maiden special weight at Aqueduct by 1 3/4 lengths.

The 2-year-old colt, sent off at 1-4 odds, improved from his third-place debut at Saratoga last month to give his sire his milestone first victory. Froutien completed the seven-furlong contest in 1:24.84 over a fast track.

Kendrick Carmouche, taking over riding duties from John Velazquez who was at Woodbine for three Grade I assignments, guided the $700,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic purchase to a front-running victory. The colt established a narrow advantage through an opening quarter-mile in :22.84 and maintained his lead throughout, holding off a late challenge from debuting Royal Riddle in the stretch.

Trained by Todd Pletcher for Tagermeen Racing, Froutien was originally purchased for $95,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearling Sale before being led out unsold on a $160,000 bid at OBS in March. The May 7 foal later breezed an eighth of a mile in :10 1/5 over Timonium’s sloppy track before commanding $700,000 from Mahmoud Mouni on behalf of the Libyan-based Tagermeen Racing.

The winner is out of It’s Timeless, a daughter of multiple stakes-placed What Time It Is, who also produced two-time stakes winner Never Enough Time. The dam delivered a Cyberknife colt this year and was bred back to Solomini.

Galilean, who stands for $3,500 at Questroyal North in New York, was himself a $600,000 two-year-old purchase who won six of 16 starts in stakes company for trainer John Sadler.

Breeders Andy and the late Susan Beadnell also bred New York-bred Haveyougoneaway, winner of the 2016 Grade I Ballerina Stakes.

Froutien now has a lifetime record of 2-1-0-1 with earnings of $54,800.
