California Works: Grade I Winners Highlight Tab, Tenma Has First Work Since Oaks
Champion Citizen Bull (Into Mischief) and Vodka With a Twist (Thousand Words) posted identical six-furlong bullet works Saturday at Santa Anita Park, both clocking 1:12.20 as several Grade I performers returned to the tab.
The Bob Baffert-trained Citizen Bull completed his second workout since finishing 15th in the Kentucky Derby. Vodka With a Twist, trained by Philip D’Amato, worked handily from the gate after being scratched from the Miss Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.
Baffert also sent out Grade I winner Tenma (Nyquist) for her first recorded work since finishing fourth in the Kentucky Oaks. The filly drilled four furlongs in :48.60, ranking 35th fastest among 71 workers at the distance.
Multiple graded stakes winner Spirit of Makena (Ghostzapper) worked five furlongs in 1:04.20 for trainer George Papaprodromou. The 6-year-old has maintained a consistent work pattern since returning from an 18-month layoff on March 29, when he finished third in the Grade II San Carlos Stakes.
Multiple graded stakes-placed Judge Miller (Curlin) breezed a half-mile in :48.40, ranking 23rd of 71 workers for trainer Mark Glatt. The horse recently returned from an 11½-month absence to win an allowance optional claimer on May 4.
