James Graham, the man behind the lens at Hodges Photography, has a story to tell. He recently celebrated his 3,000th career win, a milestone he achieved by steering Vortex to victory in the second race at Fair Grounds Sunday.

Graham was overcome with emotion. “I came here in 2002, just wanting a chance,” he confessed. He wished his late mother could have witnessed his triumph.

He expressed gratitude to everyone who had ever given him a winning opportunity in his career. “This is all because of you guys,” he said. He also thanked his wife, acknowledging that without her, he wouldn’t be where he is today.

Fair Grounds has been a significant part of Graham’s life. He’s made many friends there, and sadly, lost some too. “Racing is a life and we are all a big family,” he reflected.

Before making a name for himself in the U.S., Graham had a single win in his native Ireland. His first U.S. victory was at River Downs on July 1, 2003, aboard B.J. Star. This was only his 12th mount, and he was training under Allan Shapoff.

Later that year, he tasted his first victory at Fair Grounds, riding High Octave for trainer Ronny Werner. With 1,340 wins under his belt, Graham is now the third most successful rider at Fair Grounds since 1986. He trails only Ronald Ardoin and Robby Albarado.

Graham cherishes his victories at Fair Grounds. “My career took off here,” he said. He recalled the early days of his career, riding alongside Gerard Melancon, Robby Albarado, Shane Sellars, and E.J. Perrodin. “I got educated here,” he said.

At 44, Graham is still ambitious. He has won over 47 graded stakes, including Fair Grounds victories on 135-1 shot Ive Struck a Nerve in the 2013 GII Risen Star S., 28-1 shot Call Me Midnight in the 2022 GIII Lecomte S., and 7-1 shot Ron the Greek in the 2010 Lecomte. He’s still got a couple more goals at this track that he wants to accomplish. “I’m banging on the door and I’m young, fit and healthy,” he declared.
