Canterbury has canceled its Saturday racing card due to excessive heat, with the Northern Stars Turf Festival now rescheduled for June 28. The Minnesota track announced the decision Saturday morning as heat indexes were projected to exceed 105 degrees.
“With projected heat indexes in excess of 105 well into the evening and the safety of horses, jockeys and staff working outdoors being paramount, Canterbury Park has canceled today’s races,” track officials stated via social media.
Entries for the rescheduled Northern Stars Turf Festival will be taken June 22.
Sunday’s racing program at Canterbury will proceed with a modified schedule. First post time has been pushed back from 1 p.m. CT to 5 p.m. CT to avoid the most intense heat of the day.
The extreme weather pattern is affecting multiple racing venues across the eastern United States.
Parx Racing near Philadelphia has also announced cancellations of its Monday, June 23 and Tuesday, June 24 cards. The Pennsylvania track cited forecasted temperatures expected to reach the upper 90s.
These precautionary measures reflect growing industry awareness regarding heat-related safety concerns for equine and human participants.
