Hey Nay Nay Stays Perfect In Tyro Stakes

Monmouth Park announced Saturday that Hey Nay Nay delivered a commanding performance in the $100,000 Tyro Stakes, dominating the field from start to finish as the heavy 1-5 favorite.

The No Nay Never colt, who made a successful debut for trainer John Sadler with a gate-to-wire victory at Santa Anita on June 1, shipped cross-country to continue his winning ways at Monmouth.

Hey Nay Nay broke sharply from the gate under jockey Paco Lopez, establishing control of the tempo immediately. Sir Newtons Laws briefly kept pace early but quickly faded as Hey Nay Nay turned for home and extended his advantage. Win N Juice rallied from last to secure second place, but finished seven lengths behind the winner.

“This is a mature 2-year-old,” said Sadler. “I didn’t want to keep him in the barn and I thought he had the personality to ship cross country so we landed on this spot. We originally talked about laying second (before Monster scratched) and then when that horse scratched I thought he would probably be in front the way he was. Even winning as easily as he did I thought he got more experience out of this. He looked straighter and stronger in his second start compared to his first, so he showed improvement to me. It was a good race for him. This horse I’m hoping ends up in the Breeders’ Cup.”

The Irish-bred colt completed the five furlongs on turf in :56.87 over firm ground.

Hey Nay Nay, a $300,000 Keeneland September purchase for Hronis Racing and Iapetus Racing, is a half-brother to multiple group stakes-placed Global Storm, who earned over $400,000 competing in England and the UAE.

His dam Travel, herself a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner and Kentucky Derby runner-up Eight Belles, has a yearling filly by Churchill (Ire) and a filly born this year by Pinatubo (Ire).

Win N Juice ($30,000 OBS March purchase) finished second for owner Daugherty Racing LLC and trainer Nolan Ramsey, earning his first black-type placement. Red Lad, an American Pharoah colt, took third for owners Jeremiah Kane and Richard Donworth.

Several entrants were scratched from the race, including Black Volt, Jeremiahtwentynine, Monster, Schwarzenegger, and Thunder Chuck.
