Hill ‘n’ Dale at Xalapa has acquired a half-interest in 2024 Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna) in a deal that includes former NFL star Marshawn Lynch, the farm announced Tuesday.
Trained by Kenny McPeek, who selected her as a yearling, Thorpedo Anna is one of only seven female horses in American turf history — and just the second 3-year-old filly alongside Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d’Oro) — to claim the coveted Horse of the Year title.
The champion mare has compiled an exceptional record of 11 wins and two seconds from 14 starts, with earnings exceeding $5 million.
Thorpedo Anna’s impressive resume includes six Grade I victories: the Kentucky Oaks, Acorn Stakes, CCA Oaks, Cotillion Stakes, Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, and Apple Blossom Handicap.
“It is extremely rare, if not impossible, to acquire an interest in a mare of this caliber,” said John G. Sikura, owner of Hill ‘n’ Dale at Xalapa. “A Horse of the Year, out of a Broodmare of the Year is beyond a unique commodity.”
Sikura emphasized the significance of Thorpedo Anna’s pedigree, noting its foundational importance to modern breeding. “Deep in her pedigree are the names of Cosmah, Almahmoud and the great sires Halo and Northern Dancer who is perhaps the greatest sire ever.”
The acquisition represents a strategic effort to expand racing’s audience. NFL star and actor Marshawn Lynch participated in the deal after visiting Saratoga, where Sikura said he became “utterly enthralled” with the sport.
Thorpedo Anna will continue racing through the remainder of 2025 with plans to extend her career into next year.
McPeek confirmed that the original ownership group will maintain their stake. “Judy Hicks, Mark Edwards and Sherri McPeek’s Magdalena Racing will continue to retain their percentage ownership of Thorpedo Anna and we are all excited to continue with such a great partner as John Sikura and Hill ‘n’ Dale.”
