Into Mischief Son From Jolie Olimpica Shines in Niigata Dirt Debut

Northern Farm‘s Satono Voyage dominated his dirt debut at Niigata Sunday, breaking his maiden by 10 lengths as the heavy favorite in his second career start.

The 2-year-old colt by Into Mischief cruised to victory in the 1200-meter contest, stopping the clock at 1:10.8 while under minimal urging from jockey Keita Tosaki.

Satono Voyage entered the race off a promising runner-up effort at Hanshin on June 14, where he finished just 1 1/2 lengths behind the winner when trying turf. The switch to dirt proved decisive for the Hiroyasu Tanaka trainee.

Breaking from the rail as the 9-10 favorite, Satono Voyage secured the lead before the 400-meter mark and maintained command throughout. Tosaki kept his mount under wraps in the stretch, gearing down in the final 50 meters with the outcome never in doubt.

The April 3 foal represents an impressive pedigree connection, being the first offspring of Brazilian champion Jolie Olimpica. His dam earned Horse of the Year honors in Brazil, along with champion 2-year-old filly recognition and a Group 1 victory in her native country.

Jolie Olimpica continued her success in North America after being acquired by the late Rick Porter’s Fox Hill Farm. Under trainer Richard Mandella’s care, she collected three graded stakes victories, including the GII Nassau Stakes at Woodbine that earned her a Sovereign Award as Canada’s champion turf female in 2021.

The talented mare also finished second to champion Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) in the COVID-delayed running of the GI Coolmore Jenny Wiley Stakes in 2020.

Shimokobe Farm purchased Jolie Olimpica for $675,000 at Fasig-Tipton November in 2021, bred her to Into Mischief, and exported her to Japan. After producing Satono Voyage, she was barren to Triple Crown winner Contrail (Jpn) for 2024 before delivering a colt by dual Horse of the Year Equinox (Jpn) on February 12 of this year.

Into Mischief continues to make his mark in Japan, now having sired 36 winners from 41 starters in the country.

Satono Voyage races for owner Hajime Satomi and was bred by Shimokobe Farm. His career record stands at 2-1-1-0 with earnings of $58,724.
