Spendthrift Acquires $2.6M Into Mischief Colt at Saratoga Sale
Spendthrift Farm purchased a colt by leading sire Into Mischief for $2.6 million Tuesday evening at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, marking the highest price of the two-day auction.
The seven-figure yearling, cataloged as Hip 163, is out of multiple Grade I winner I’m A Chatterbox (Munnings), who earned over $2.3 million during her racing career.
This acquisition represents a significant investment in the maternal line for Spendthrift, which already owns the yearling’s year-older full-sister, Bad Manners—purchased for $700,000 at last year’s Saratoga sale.
The colt was bred by Spendthrift in partnership with Fletcher and Carolyn Gray, who campaigned I’m A Chatterbox to eight victories from 19 starts. The mare’s impressive resume includes wins in the GI Cotillion Stakes, GI Delaware Handicap, and GI Juddmonte Spinster Stakes.
Hip 163 was consigned by Warrendale Sales as agent for Spendthrift and Grayson Farm.
The purchase came approximately midway through Tuesday’s second and final session of the elite yearling sale in upstate New York. By that point, the auction had already produced 14 million-dollar yearlings, with Hip 163 being the fifth seven-figure transaction of the evening session.
As the stallion operation that stands Into Mischief, Spendthrift’s acquisition represents a strategic investment in one of their flagship sire’s most promising offspring from an exceptional female family.
