Racing Horses Veteran Saffie Joseph Secures 14th Consecutive Gulfstream Title
Gulfstream Park concluded its Sunshine Meet Sunday with familiar names atop the leaderboard as Saffie Joseph, Jr. claimed his 14th consecutive trainer’s title with 30 wins.
Joseph overcame a significant deficit in the standings to continue his remarkable streak of dominance at the Florida track.
“It never gets old,” Joseph said of the title. “Actually, like a month ago, we were down six or seven. I looked at it and said, ‘We’ll give it a go and see if it can work out.’ The horses got in form, and it worked out. All the credit goes to the horses. All praise to God and the workers and the owners who give me the horses. I’m a small part of it.”
Jose D’Angelo finished second in the trainer standings with 26 wins.
Jockey Edgard Zayas secured the meet’s leading rider title with 44 victories, marking his third Sunshine Meet championship in five years and his 10th overall title at Gulfstream. Miguel Vasquez finished a close second with 42 wins.
“It feels great. It’s been a great year,” Zayas said. “We’ve been getting a lot of support from all the trainers, owners, my agent and family. It’s nice to get it done again, especially right before the Championship Meet. It’s a really important meet and it’s nice to have that momentum.”
In the owner categories, Arindel led all competitors in purse money earned while JC Racing Stable topped the win column with eight victories.
Racing at Gulfstream Park resumes Thursday with the opening day card of its prestigious Championship Meet. The upcoming season will feature several marquee events, including Pegasus World Cup Day on January 24 and the 75th running of the GI Curlin Florida Derby on March 28.
