Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners confirmed Sunday that Kentucky Derby runner-up Journalism will compete in the 150th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course this Saturday.
“Journalism has been grand since the Kentucky Derby and [trainer] Michael McCarthy has green-lighted him to head to Pimlico Race Course for the 150th Preakness Stakes,” Eclipse announced via social media. “We look forward to showcasing Journalism’s talents in Baltimore in such a coveted American Classic with Umberto Rispoli set to ride.”
McCarthy expressed satisfaction with Journalism’s condition after observing the colt’s training session Sunday morning at Churchill Downs.
“I thought he looked very good. I didn’t see a whole lot of difference,” McCarthy said. “He’s a horse that carries a lot of substance, a lot of condition. He looked very, very good this morning.”
The son of Curlin opened his 2025 campaign with a victory in the Grade II San Felipe Stakes on March 1, followed by a win in the Grade I Santa Anita Derby on April 5. As the betting favorite in the Kentucky Derby on May 3, Journalism finished 1½ lengths behind winner Sovereignty (Into Mischief).
According to McCarthy, Journalism will likely ship to Pimlico on Tuesday in preparation for the second leg of the Triple Crown.
