Maxfield Colt First to Seven Figures at OBS

Maxfield Colt Breaks Seven-Figure Barrier at OBS March Sale

A colt from the first crop of Grade I winner Maxfield became the first seven-figure sale at the OBS March sale Tuesday, commanding $1 million from Japanese trainer Mitsu Nakauchida.

Hip 119, consigned by Wavertree Stables, showcased his potential during last week’s under-tack show where he shared the :9 4/5 bullet — establishing himself as one of the standout prospects of the session.

The million-dollar yearling represents a significant return on investment for the pinhooking partnership that acquired him for just $75,000 at last year’s Keeneland September sale.

Out of multiple stakes winner and graded-placed Eyeinthesky (Sky Mesa), the colt’s pedigree combines proven racing class with first-crop sire potential that clearly resonated with international buyers.

The transaction highlighted strong demand for select yearlings during Tuesday’s opening session, with the Maxfield colt becoming the first to reach the seven-figure threshold at this year’s sale.

Nakauchida’s purchase signals continued Japanese interest in acquiring top American bloodstock, with the colt now set to continue his development overseas before a potential racing career in Japan.

The OBS March sale continues through Wednesday with additional select yearlings expected to generate significant interest from domestic and international buyers.
