Midland Money Returns Triumphant at Saratoga After Year-Long Absence
Saratoga welcomed back ‘TDN Rising Star’ Midland Money in impressive fashion as the 3-year-old colt captured Sunday’s $110,000 allowance race by 3 1/4 lengths following a 14-month layoff.
The Bob Baffert trainee, sent off as the 6-5 favorite, seized command early and never relinquished his advantage throughout the six-furlong contest. Midland Money completed the distance in 1:09.83 over a fast track.
[Spoiler Alert] After setting fractions of :22.08 and :44.91, the son of Shancelot maintained his dominance down the stretch, with jockey Luis Saez easing him up in the final sixteenth as Aggelos the Great (City of Light) rallied for second.
The victory marked Midland Money’s first start since his spectacular debut at Santa Anita last June, where he earned ‘TDN Rising Star’ status following a six-length romp.
Owned by Edward A. Childs, Midland Money has shown remarkable return on investment through his brief career. Initially purchased as a $40,000 Keeneland November weanling and later a $130,000 Keeneland September yearling, the colt commanded $650,000 at the OBS March juvenile sale.
Midland Money was bred in Kentucky by Memory Lane Racing, LLC. His dam, Magnolias in Bloom (by Flatter), has a yearling filly by Authentic and a weanling filly by Knicks Go. She was bred back to Yaupon for her next foal.
With Sunday’s victory, Midland Money remains undefeated in two career starts with earnings of $92,900.
