Not This Time’s Blackout Time Dominates Pea Patch to Earn Rising Star Status

Ellis Park announced Saturday that Blackout Time earned ‘TDN Rising Star’ status after a commanding victory in his second career race. The 2-year-old colt by Not This Time dominated the field with a 9 3/4-length win in a maiden special weight contest.

Trained by Kenneth McPeek, Blackout Time entered the race as a heavy favorite following his runner-up debut at Churchill Downs on June 29. In that initial outing, he finished behind Dazzle d’Oro, who had previously earned ‘Rising Star’ recognition before tragically being euthanized after sustaining a catastrophic training injury at Saratoga last week.

Blackout Time battled with Password (Uncle Mo) through the backstretch before taking command around the far turn. The promising colt pulled away decisively in the stretch, with I Did I Did (Curlin) finishing second.

“It’s another winner for @b_hernandezjr and @KennyMcPeek,” FanDuel Racing noted on social media following the performance.

The victory came in the fifth race at Ellis Park, a $100,000 maiden special weight at one mile, which Blackout Time completed in 1:37.12 on a fast track.

Blackout Time represents significant investment from his connections. His dam, Beauty Parlor (by Elusive Quality), was purchased for $325,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale by Broadhurst Agency while carrying an Uncle Mo colt. The winner himself changed hands multiple times, most recently selling for $210,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale.

Beauty Parlor boasts an impressive production record with a yearling filly by Epicenter and a weanling filly by Practical Joke. She is scheduled to be bred to Corniche next term. The colt’s second dam is French group stakes winner Moon Queen (Ire) by Sadler’s Wells.

Owned by Brookdale Racing, Inc. and Lance Gasaway, Blackout Time becomes Not This Time’s ninth ‘TDN Rising Star’ overall and his fifth this year. The colt was bred in Kentucky by Newstead Corp.
