Ocala Stud Stallion Seeking the Soul Dies From Colic

Ocala Stud announced that stallion Seeking the Soul died unexpectedly on Feb. 28 due to complications from colic. The son of Perfect Soul was standing at the Florida farm with his first crop of 3-year-olds hitting the track this year.

Bred and campaigned by Charles Fipke, Seeking the Soul established himself as a versatile graded stakes performer during his racing career. The Kentucky-bred won the 2017 Grade I Clark Handicap, 2018 Grade III Ack Ack Stakes, and the 2019 Grade II Stephen Foster Stakes.

"The unexpected passing of Seeking the Soul is a tremendous loss," said Ocala Stud’s David O’Farrell. "He was a remarkable racehorse who had just begun his stallion career. His impact will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and worked with him, including all of us here at Ocala Stud. We extend our condolences to Charles Fipke, who bred him and guided him through an extraordinary racing career."

The talented runner compiled an impressive record on the track, hitting the board in 20 of his 32 career starts. He placed in eight graded stakes races, including runner-up finishes in the $1-million Grade I Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and the $9-million Grade I Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes.

Seeking the Soul boasted an impressive pedigree, being out of the graded stakes-winning Seeking the Gold mare Seeking the Title. His female family traces to the Phipps dynasty that produced undefeated champion Personal Ensign, champion Storm Flag Flying, and Grade I winners My Flag, Miner’s Mark, and Traditionally.

The stallion’s first crop of runners are currently competing as 3-year-olds.
