Penn National announced Tuesday that the four turf stakes races scheduled for Friday, June 20, including the GIII Penn Mile, have been postponed to Friday, June 27, due to significant rainfall in the forecast.
This marks the second weather-related postponement for the event, which was originally scheduled for May 30 before being moved to June 20.
“With significant, persistent rainfall in the local forecast for the next several days, the four turf stakes races carded for Friday, June 20th at Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course have been rescheduled for Friday, June 27,” the track stated in its official release.
The affected stakes races — the Penn Mile, Penn Oaks, Alphabet Soup Stakes and Lyphard Stakes — will run as previously drawn on the new date.
The seven non-stakes races originally scheduled for June 20 will proceed as planned, with first post remaining at 5 p.m.
Penn National emphasized safety concerns in its decision. “Of course, the safety of our athletes — both human and equine — is everyone’s top priority. Moving these four stakes to June 27 also helps ensure that our horsemen will be able to run their horses on the turf, as intended.”
Guest announcer Larry Collmus will still be on site on June 27 to call the four stakes races as originally planned.
