Flying Dutchmen Breeding and Racing announced Thursday that “TDN Rising Star” Shred the Gnar will receive 30 days off after being scratched from last Friday’s GI Acorn Stakes at Saratoga.
Hunter Rankin, president of Travis Boersma’s operation, confirmed the promising Into Mischief filly is dealing with minor physical issues.
“She’s doing fine,” Rankin said. “We had Dr. Bramlage (at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital) go over her, bone scan and everything else. But it turns out, she’s just gonna need 30 days. Her front, high-suspensories are bugging her a little bit, but it’s nothing that we can’t deal with. She’ll get 30 days on the farm, then she’ll be back and ready to go.”
The $610,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga graduate had emerged as a potential star for trainer Brian Lynch heading into the Acorn, which was ultimately won by La Cara (Street Sense) in front-running fashion over a sloppy-and-sealed track.
Shred the Gnar, a full-sister to millionaire Owendale, finished second by a neck in her sprint debut at Gulfstream on February 9. She followed with impressive victories in her next two starts, winning by a combined 13 1/2 lengths.
Her most recent performance featured a dominant wire-to-wire victory while stretching out around two turns in a Churchill Downs optional claimer on May 2, earning a 94 Beyer Speed Figure.
“We were so excited to bring her up there and showcase her,” Rankin said. “She’s really turned into a very nice filly. She’s got a lot of talent.”
The connections have not announced specific targets for the filly’s return following her recovery period.
