Setting Sun Euthanized After Saratoga Race Injury

NYRA announced Thursday that Setting Sun, a first-time starter who suffered an injury during Wednesday’s ninth race at Saratoga, has been humanely euthanized due to severe fractures deemed inoperable.

The Miguel Clement-trained filly was pulled up in the stretch run by jockey Flavien Prat with an injury to her left front leg. On-track veterinarians immediately attended to Setting Sun before transporting her to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital for further evaluation.

“Radiographs performed at Rood & Riddle showed severe fractures to the left knee, which were deemed to be inoperable. As a result, and upon recommendation of the attending veterinarians, Setting Sun was humanely euthanized on Wednesday evening,” the organization stated in its release.

NYRA officials noted that Setting Sun’s death marks the fourth equine fatality at the current Saratoga meet. Two fatalities have occurred during racing and two during morning training sessions.

The daughter of Caravaggio was making her career debut in Wednesday’s race before the incident occurred.
