The University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program recently announced that the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will be the recipient of the prestigious 2023 Clay Puett Award, recognizing their dedication to equine welfare and their impactful work in providing Thoroughbred athletes with fulfilling careers. According to RTIP Chair Robert Hartman, the organization has significantly elevated the industry and transitioned numerous Thoroughbreds to new homes.

Established in 2012, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance operates by accrediting organizations and providing grants to support the retraining, retirement, and rehoming of Thoroughbreds. Funded by industry leaders such as Breeders’ Cup Ltd., The Jockey Club, and Keeneland Association Inc., the organization has distributed $31.9 million in grants, facilitating the successful transition of 16,500 Thoroughbreds through accredited organizations.

“The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance has been at the forefront of equine welfare,” said Robert Hartman, highlighting the impact of the organization and the industry-wide support it has garnered. This year alone, 86 accredited organizations have received grants totaling $3.8 million, further demonstrating their commitment to creating a positive impact within the industry.

The Clay Puett Award, established in 1994, is dedicated to individuals who have made significant contributions to the racing industry. Named after Clay Puett, an Arizona resident known for his innovations in racing technology, previous winners include influential figures such as Joe Harper, Marylou Whitney, and The Grayson-Jockey Club Foundation. The recognition of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance with this award further solidifies the organization’s pivotal role in the world of equine welfare and their mission to provide Thoroughbred athletes with fulfilling careers through successful transitioning efforts.
