Voting Open For Retired New York Racehorse Of The Year Award

NYRA opened public voting Thursday for the Down Broadway Retired Racehorse of the Year Award, which will be presented during New York Thoroughbred Aftercare Day at Saratoga Race Course on July 17.

The annual fan-selected honor celebrates exceptional retired racehorses who have successfully transitioned to second careers, according to the New York Horsemen’s Association.

Voting remains open through June 26, with each person limited to a single ballot. The winner will be honored in the Saratoga winner’s circle following the first race on Aftercare Day, when supporters can also collect wristbands representing their favorite nominees.

This year’s nominees represent four prominent aftercare organizations:

  • Broadway Producer (New Vocations)
  • Cut of Music (Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation)
  • Flag Is Flying (Second Chance Thoroughbreds)
  • Mel’s Baby Sister (ReRun, Inc.)

Mel’s Baby Sister, a graduate of the ReRun program, has demonstrated remarkable adaptability in her post-racing career. The mare has become a standout in regional equestrian competitions.

The award highlights the racing industry’s growing commitment to thoroughbred aftercare and second-career opportunities. Saratoga’s dedicated Aftercare Day has become a signature event on the summer racing calendar, drawing attention to responsible retirement practices.

Fans can cast their votes through the official online ballot portal through the June 26 deadline.

The Down Broadway Award, now in its fourth year, has emerged as a meaningful recognition of successful thoroughbred transitions beyond the track — showcasing the versatility and athleticism these horses maintain long after their racing careers conclude.
