Gulfstream Park reported Thursday that White Abarrio completed a sharp half-mile workout as preparations intensify for his upcoming Breeders’ Cup title defense.
The 6-year-old son of Race Day, owned by C2 Racing Stable LLC, Gary Barber and La Milagrosa Stable LLC, breezed four furlongs in :46.56, the fastest of seven workers at the distance. He galloped out five furlongs in an impressive :59.29.
White Abarrio, winner of the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita, is targeting the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar on Saturday, Nov. 1.
“Last week’s breeze was sharp and this week’s breeze going a half is similar,” said trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. “He seems to be in good order and going well. We just want to get him in the right spot mentally to hopefully fire one of his best races again.”
The workout marks White Abarrio’s second breeze since finishing fifth (later placed fourth) in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Saratoga on Aug. 31. His previous drill was a three-furlong bullet in :33.73 on Sept. 25.
Joseph confirmed plans to ship the 10-time winner to Del Mar on Oct. 23.
The trainer’s Breeders’ Cup contingent could include as many as five horses. Among them is TDN Rising Star Be Your Best (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}), who is being pointed toward the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
Joseph is also considering three contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint: Haulin Ice (Coal Front), winner of the Princess Rooney Stakes; R Disaster (Awesome Slew), who recently captured the Vagrancy Stakes; and Mystic Lake (Mo Town).
The trainer secured his first Breeders’ Cup victory last year when Soul of an Angel (Atreides) won the Filly & Mare Sprint.
